Live cattle futures surged, closing higher by up to $2.40, while feeder cattle futures soared by up to $5.32. The CME feeder cattle index also rose. However, the actual cash trade for cattle was softer, settling at $228. The Cattle on Feed report showed a significant drop in the number of cattle placed in feedlots and marketed, indicating a tighter supply. Wholesale boxed beef prices also increased, and the estimated number of cattle slaughtered this week was down by nearly 29,000 head compared to last year.
