Description

Tackling the over-representation of Indigenous Australians in jail is a huge challenge.

It's a complex issue with many underlying factors like the legacies of colonisation, dispossession, racism, childhood trauma and inadequate housing.

In some states, a Koori Court system has been developed for Indigenous people who plead guilty to help reduce the number of First Nations people in prison.

In Victoria, Koori Courts have been operating since 2002, to help reduce cultural alienation, strengthen accountability and address underlying issues that contribute to criminal behaviour.
