Children can’t learn on an empty stomach, with Wawira Njiru
Description
Wawira Njiru is the CEO of Food 4 Education. Food 4 Education is a not-for-profit organisation aiming to make school feeding programs mainstream across Africa by designing a blueprint, operating it, and supporting replication to ensure that no child has to learn on an empty stomach.
In this episode, Wawira discusses how Food 4 Education’s mission to end childhood hunger by providing nutritious school meals began in a makeshift kitchen feeding one classroom, and has grown into a widespread organisation feeding more than half a million children in Kenya, with plans to expand to other countries. Wawira reflects on the evolution of their initiative, strategies, and centralised kitchen model, as well as the importance of sourcing locally available food, community involvement, and the challenges in scaling up.
