The Government has announced an overhaul to the classification of earthquake-prone buildings, introducing a new system that will see thousands of buildings moved out of the regime.

Under the changes, existing New Building Standard percentage ratings for strengthening or demolishing buildings would be removed, in favour of a "more proportionate" system, Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk says.
