Client Consultation: Managing Social Interactions and Creating a Safe Space for Your Dog
Description
Kathy has two dogs, Kelsey and Zoe, who have been exhibiting behavioral issues. Kelsey, a black lab mix, has fear insecurity and acts out in fear, while Zoe, an Australian cattle dog mix, has high energy and often overwhelms Kelsey. The two dogs have gotten into fights, primarily over resource guarding. Kathy has been crate training Kelsey but has struggled with her barking at night. The dogs have been kept in Kathy's bedroom, which she sees as a safe space for Kelsey. However, this has disrupted Kathy's sleep, and she is looking for solutions. Kathy and Millie discuss Kelsey's behavior and the need for structure and boundaries. They talk about Kelsey's role as a referee. They also discuss Kelsey's need for safe spaces and the need for Kathy to establish herself as the one in charge. They talk about Kelsey's behavior on the golf course and the need for her to understand that she is not the bouncer in social interactions. They also discuss the importance of setting up a healthier way out for Kelsey and providing clear guidance and boundaries. In this conversation, Millie and Kathy discuss the need to establish boundaries and control for Kathy's dog, Kelsey. They talk about the importance of leash training and teaching Kelsey to ask for permission before interacting with others. They also discuss the role of Kelsey as a 'bouncer' and the need to shift that responsibility away from her.
