Common Misconceptions of the “Cloud”

Description

There are many misconceptions of the cloud that people believe to convince themselves that they shouldn’t move to the cloud for different services. I’m going to cover a few here and hopefully this adds some food for thought to your cloud journey!

“It’s not secure enough for what we do.”

Let’s start with the one I hear more often than not. So many people (and don’t feel bad if you’re one of them) believe that the cloud is inherently less secure. Many internal network infrastructure administrators believe so heavily in their ability to secure a network that they neglect to implement the most important pieces because of either cost or complexity.

The cloud affords companies the ability to implement rock solid firewalls, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection, role-based access controls, just-in-time access, and rights management infinitely easier and cheaper. This creates an environment where these technologies are actually used, making the network and your data infinitely more secure.

“It’s more expensive than on-prem.”

This is one, when taken at face value, makes sense. However, as we dig in and do a true cost analysis, we find that it is more often than not, also wrong.

If we are to consider the monthly cost of the service against what the company would spend in licensing then it will most likely be much more expensive. But that’s not an “apples to apples“ comparison. When calculating the cost for the on-prem environments, much more needs to be considered: server hardware, server warranties, server support, server operating system licensing, virtualization software & support, electric, air conditioning, switching hardware, battery backup, data backup, application server licensing/support/maintenance, manpower to configure, manpower to administer and so on and so forth. All of these things add up quick and when they do, you’d be surprised how many times we see online options being more palatable.

“If we put everything in the cloud, I will be our of a job!”

Again, this one couldn’t be further from the truth At least not caused by the move to the cloud. I can’t help a sucky boss....

Moving these menial tasks like managing patches on an Exchange Server go away, allowing room for much more valuable work. A successful company didn’t get successful because they really rocked their Exchange administration. They got ahead because they were able to innovate and create a competitive edge. They did this by leveraging their most important assets (you......) to be able to do great and valuable work.

You wont be out of a job, you’ll be able to do a better one...

These are just three of the misconceptions that exist about the cloud. Find yourself an amazing cloud advisor (such as myself) to help you understand your options and how they affect your business.
