Vocational skills are vitally important but often neglected in favour of other career options. The WorldSkills Competition was created to break down the negative sentiment towards those who choose a career in the trades, and the most recent competition was held in Lyan, France, where 1400 competitors tested their skills against counterparts from across the globe. Philip Saayman represented South Africa in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning category, and was awarded the medal for “Best in Nation”. He spoke to Lester Kiewit about the experience.
