Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher Lucero Pena has returned to Rawlins after being involved in a serious car crash.
On the evening of Friday, September 19th, Pena was involved in a head-on collision. Sheriff Alex Bakken wrote in a social media post that Pena suffered multiple severe injuries and was life-flighted to Banner Wyoming Medical Center in critical condition. Pena remained in Casper for nearly two weeks, until last Thursday, when Sheriff Bakken announced that she had been transferred to Memorial Hospital of Carbon County to continue her recovery.
In a social media post from Friday, October 3rd, Sheriff Bakken wrote that units from the Carbon County Fire Protection District, Rawlins Police Department, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, Wyoming Highway Patrol, and Memorial Hospital of Carbon County escorted Pena’s ambulance back to Rawlins.
The Sheriff’s Department created a GoFundMe account to help the Pena family cover the unexpected out-of-pocket medical, travel, and lodging expenses from what is expected to be a long recovery. All proceeds from the GoFundMe are given directly to the Pena family. As of Friday afternoon, 53 people had donated $5,455 toward the campaign.
Sheriff Bakken wrote that he is proud to live and work in Carbon County, where the community support is second to none.
Bigfoot99 will include a link to Pena’s GoFundMe page when this story is posted to our website later today.
