Courtroom Drama Intensifies in Karen Read Case as Dog-Bite Expert Takes Stand

The courtroom was filled with tension as Judge Beverly Cannone resumed the hearing in the high-profile Karen Read case. The trial, already plagued by allegations of corruption and forensic disputes, took another dramatic turn as Dr. Marie Russell, the defense's dog-bite expert, returned to testify.

Dr. Russell’s testimony was central to the defense’s strategy of undermining the prosecution’s vehicular homicide theory. “No car accident scenario could create that configuration of wounds on the arm,” she stated firmly, supporting the claim that John O’Keefe’s injuries were caused by a dog and not Read’s vehicle.

The prosecution, led by Hank Brennan, immediately launched an aggressive cross-examination. Brennan challenged Russell’s methodology, pointing out that her conclusions were based on personal experience and articles rather than a universally accepted standard. “You’re relying on personal experience and articles, not a published standard,” Brennan remarked. Russell, with 30 years of emergency room experience, defended her findings as the result of a "multi-factorial process."

Brennan pressed further, highlighting inconsistencies in Russell’s prior testimony. “At trial, you said these wounds might be scratches or bites. Now, you’re certain they’re bites?” he questioned. Russell responded that additional materials reviewed after the trial had solidified her conclusions. However, she admitted she had not examined Chloe, the dog allegedly responsible, nor measured its jaw—a key point the prosecution seized upon.

To further undermine Russell’s credibility, Brennan revealed that the state had created a mold of Chloe’s teeth, which experts like Jonathon Walsh used to conclude that the injuries were not dog-related.

Defense attorney Robert Alessi countered with a robust defense of Russell’s credentials. “If you ran an artificial intelligence program, you couldn’t come up with a better expert on this topic,” Alessi declared. He criticized the prosecution for not presenting its own dog-bite specialist and questioned the integrity of their evidence.

Beyond the forensic debate, accusations of a cover-up loomed over the proceedings. The defense alleged that law enforcement tampered with evidence to frame Read, citing the suspension of Trooper Michael Proctor after the discovery of “regrettable” messages. Alessi demanded access to Proctor’s emails and texts, stating, “Transparency is the cornerstone of justice.”

As the hearing unfolded, the stakes continued to rise in a case that has captivated public attention. Both sides remained steadfast in their arguments, leaving the courtroom bracing for further revelations.
