The Virgin Mary is a central figure in the opening chapters of both Matthew's and Luke’s gospel, and early in Christian history, devotion to Mary became common in both the Eastern and the Western Christian traditions. However, many Protestant denominations today see Roman Catholic devotion to Mary as nothing short of idolatrous.
