Opening
We’re in Obergurgl for a packed World Cup weekend, with heavy snowfall and temps down to –12°C. Conditions totally different to Levi, adding unpredictability. Ben is on the ground with interviews and reaction.
Feature Interview — Dave Ryding
Pre-Race Mindset
Racing in his sponsor resort brings extra pressure: “You never want to let people down.” Focus stays on routine, headspace, and controlling what he can.
Form After Levi
Encouraged by a strong opener but realistic about expectations at 39. Confident he’s still competitive.
Why Obergurgl Feels Like Home
Nearly a decade linked with the resort. Loves the support and familiarity.
Race Preparation
Treats every World Cup and Olympic race the same: same schedule, same process. Values a polished routine and consistency.
Superstitions
None, beyond putting the right boot on first. Past podium bibs don’t influence him anymore.
Final Season
Retiring to spend more time with family and reduce physical strain. Post-ski plans include freeride days, mentoring young racers, and exploring new roles.
Next Gen GB Racers
Huge belief in Laurie Taylor and Billy Major, and excitement around younger athletes like the Kerrigan-Smith brothers and Molly Butler. Dave: “The future is bright for British skiing.”
Race Day Recap
Dave Ryding
Finished 25th. Skied conservatively in run two, likely due to pressure. Points on the board but below expectations.
Billy Major
Finished 17th, one of his best WC results. Built confidence through the day; second run much stronger.
Laurie Taylor
Missed run two after last week’s superb 4th in Levi. Challenging winter-snow conditions caught many racers out.
Post-Race Reactions
Dave
“Didn’t feel good all day… too many mistakes.” Plans 10 days of physical training at home, then back to Europe for winter-snow practice. Wants to “find the passion again.”
Billy
Took positives from tough conditions and is happy with his trend this season.
Closing Analysis
Dave fought pressure and challenging snow but still scored points. Billy continues to climb. Laurie will reset and push on — huge potential ahead. GB team atmosphere remains ambitious, grounded, and confident in the season to come
