EP 21: Reconnecting to Culture & The Wisdom of Elders with Shannon Murphy
Description
Imagine growing up disconnected from your culture. Now imagine realizing that this was by design to separate you from the Land, your People, and your Spiritual Self.
Today’s warm and insightful episode features Indigenous changemaker, educator and social entrepreneur, Shannon Murphy. Shannon is Mohawk from Six Nations and of the Bear clan. She is a strong advocate within the Indigenous community and dedicated to the healing and wellness for individuals and families.
You will hear about how Shannon first discovered her culture, unexpectedly, during a college childcare field placement. You will also learn how her journey of self-discovery, truth and reconciliation has shaped her commitment to reciprocity in her community work and her commitment to bringing awareness of Indigenous worldviews and communities to local, provincial and national initiatives.
In our conversation, Shannon shares the invaluable role of her Elders and teachers in shaping her understanding of life, duality, and her place within the interconnected web of existence. You'll gain insights into how these relationships and teachings have influenced Shannon’s perspectives on ego, humility, and authenticity.
You'll hear an amazing story about a transformative encounter in nature that left Shannon and her husband in awe. This spiritual experience served as a powerful catalyst, reinforcing the importance of letting go and being fully present. Shannon's journey and the wisdom she imparts will encourage you to reflect on your own life, the significance of kindness and empathy, and the role each of us plays in preserving the balance of nature.
Shannon is co-owner of Niswi Kwe Consulting which lifts up Indigenous ways of knowing and being, providing an Indigenous lens that supports communities in empowering knowledge mobilization, collaboration and leadership. Shannon is also the Provincial Manager for Ontario Aboriginal Head Start Association’s Centre for Indigenous Professional Learning, and a part-time professor for Mohawk College and Kengjewin Teg Educational Institute.
