Content Warning: Janus Descending is a horror narrative aimed at a mature audience, and as such, may contain material that is upsetting or triggering for certain people. THIS EPISODE contains body horror/gore (parasitic infection causing disfigurement), hallucinations, psychological breakdown, graphic descriptions of extreme physical violence (character death, murder -- specifically, a character coded as a white man killing a character coded as an African American woman). Listener discretion is advised.
I love the premise of the story, but these two people are supposed to be scientists alone on a expedition into space and she sounds and acts like she is fourteen, and is completely mentally unstable. She spends half of the episode sounding like she is having a manic interlude and the other half crying and whining about some situation she has gotten herself into. He is terrified of everything and spends half the time leaving messages asking his brother to save them. Neither one has an ounce of common sense or maturity, or or the type of calm demeanour and logical thinking you would need to operate an interstellar scientific expedition. Yes, yes… I know it is a story but I find myself constantly irritated by both of the main characters which is unfortunate as the story could be quite good if the characters were not two doofuses in space! The acting is very good and the story has a great plot despite the bumbling characters.
