Manchester United managed to beat Southampton 2-1 last time out. Notably left out of the start were Radamel Falcao, Adnan Januzaj and Ander Herrera while Angel Di Maria was once again ruled out due to injury. As a surprise, Paddy McNair was handed a start while Wayne Rooney also returned to the starting lineup after having missed out against Stoke.
The match between Southampton and Manchester United on Monday night was billed as the battle between the European contenders and many believed that the team which emerged victorious on the night would take a huge step forward in aiding their hopes of qualification to the Champions League for next season.
The goal came as a huge shock for the Saints but they nearly delivered an instant response from Pelle’s header in the 15th minute, which flew just over the bar.
Southampton displayed no signs of letting up in the second period and created two early chances through Maya Yoshida in the 47th minute and Shane Long in the 52nd minute. However, the Saints were unable to convert either opportunity.
Then to deliver a sickening sucker punch to the impressive Southampton side, United grabbed the lead in the 71st minute out of the blue as van Persie displayed his predatory instincts once again after squeezing the ball past Forster from a Rooney free kick.
Despite the blow, Southampton continued to create chances and came close once again through Pelle in the 79th minute following some great work by Long, but the striker simply could not find a way past the inspired De Gea.
United were holding on to dear life at the end but managed to prevent Southampton from scoring and claimed an important three points on the night. However, it was evident that United had lady luck on their side and on another day, the Red Devils could have easily lost the match against a better Southampton side.
Much to the surprise of everyone, Louis van Gaal decided to go with a 5-3-2 formation against Southampton and it absolutely did not work.
Despite the victory, United were completely dominated throughout the match and van Gaal himself seemed to admit that he had made an error in judgment by going with the 5-3-2 system – as evidenced by his decision to replace central defender Paddy McNair with Ander Herrera midway through the first half.
As a result, it is very likely that van Gaal will go with a traditional 4-4-2 for the clash against Liverpool this weekend, which means that there will be a host of changes in personnel.
Young Paddy McNair looks set to be dropped following his poor performance while Chris Smalling is in doubt with injury and will most likely be replaced by Jonny Evans in central defense.
Ander Herrera should be reinstated in midfield and despite their poor performances - Maroune Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Juan Mata could continue in the starting lineup. There is a doubt regarding Angel Di Maria’s fitness but if the winger is deemed fit; he will come in for Mata, while fit-again Radamel Falcao could also be in contention.
Manchester United probably have the better side overall and should be able to claim the victory over the hapless Liverpool. However, in order to do so – the Red Devils will need to put in a much better display than they did again Southampton.
Final Prediction [Manchester United 3-1 Liverpool]
