Ep. 11 – Interview with Sunshine State Seekers
Description
What a lovely interview with a family known as the Sunshine State Seekers. This active family of 4 is hitting the trails most weekends. They have adorable trail names and go by Water Bear, Honey Bee, Lyonia, and Flutterbye. They are members of the Florida Trail Association and have been named for 2019 Groundskeepers for Granite Gear. They actively pick up trash on the trails and have recovered many interesting things. Honey Bee told us they regularly find flip flops on the trail.Water Bear and Honey Bee have been named Trailmasters of the Florida State Forest Trailwalker Program. I give this family lots of credit going out in the heat to help maintain trails. Honey Bee tells us planning is critical when taking the kids along and regular stops and breaks to have water and snacks. To keep their kids engaged on the trail, they recently picked out a camera to bring along to take pictures. Keeping kids engaged on a trail is a great way for them to love hiking without realizing they are doing a lot. Being in Florida there is a lot of animals to be aware of. Many alligators, snakes, and other reptiles and prove to be a wonderful siting or a dangerous one. Lyonia has pointed out several snakes including a rattlesnake on their trail adventures. Children can be a great lookout for animals as their point of view is lower. There have been several times my own daughter has pointed out animals I would have never seen. From hiking to camping to kayaking down the springs, this family is what outdoor life is all about.
We hope to hear more from this family in the future. They were a pleasure to chat with and the girls were really into telling their story. Take a listen on the podcast and you won’t be disappointed.
