Ep. 274 Tony Bennett, Virginia
Description
This week Coach Brendan Suhr revisits a conversation with the recently retired national champion head coach Tony Bennett.
Coach Bennett gives you a great lesson on how to face adversity - own it, grow from it and be better because of it. He relives his Virginia team's historic loss to UMBC in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament as they became the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed. He then explains how he was very intentional about how he used the experience to prepare his team for the future. The preparation paid off as his Virginia team found themselves in a similar situation as a #1 seed once again in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and once again facing adversity in close games throughout the tournament. In the end, his Cavalier team persevered as they won all six tournament games and brought home the school's first National Championship. This is one of the best lessons in leadership, grit and resilience that you will ever hear.
