Political tensions and fan frustration grew, with riots and suspensions marking the experiment. Only APOEL Levkhosia survived relegation in 1973-74, but the 1974 Cyprus coup and Turkish invasion ended the initiative. This episode underscores football’s use as a tool for political propaganda.
