Sam Peckinpah's 1971 thriller STRAW DOGS has been both criticized and defended for decades for its notorious depiction of a woman seemingly embracing her attacker. We consider what it’s trying to say about men, women, and humanity as a whole, plus how it’s answered by another film: Paul Verhoeven's 2017 psychological thriller ELLE.
