这是玛丽·雪莱为1831年版本《科学怪人》所写下序言的开头部分：

“拜伦勋爵和雪莱之间曾有过许多次、长时间的对话，而我总是一个虔诚但几乎沉默的听众。在一次这样的交谈中，他们讨论了各种哲学理论，其中包括“生命的原理”是什么，以及这种原理是否有可能被发现并传达...但，也许尸体可以被重新唤醒；“电兴奋”（galvanism）似乎就曾显示出这样的可能性；也许一个生物体的组成部分可以被制造、组合，并注入生命的温度...

100年之后的美国，加州大学的Robert Cornish，则是用他自己研制的一套方法，尝试让死者“复活”，人们称之为“拉撒路实验”...
