Ep25: Teaching and Travelling as a Volunteer from Russia to Mexico - Veronika
Description
Veronika is one of four intercultural teachers volunteering at a high school in Mexico, living with a local host family while sharing her Russian culture with first-year students. Originally from Moscow, Veronika speaks Spanish fluently and shares stories of her journey to Mexico, her experiences with public transport, Mexican food, and the warmth of her host family. She recalls how her mother named her after Verónica Castro, inspired by Mexican soap operas they watched during her childhood. Veronika also discusses her past volunteering experiences, the challenges of spotting scams in volunteer programs, and shares insights about relationships in Russia and stereotypes her students have about her country. During her stay, Veronika experienced Mexico’s iconic Día de Muertos celebrations, where she helped set up altars and traveled to towns around Lake Pátzcuaro, deeply moved by the traditions. She highlights the importance of respecting local customs as a tourist and learning from them. Finally, she encourages listeners to travel more, experience new cultures, and visit Russia to challenge what’s often seen online.¿No Airbnb account?
