- Aokigahara, the Sea of Trees, is a 12-square mile forest nestled in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, about 76 miles outside of Tokyo, Japan. Aokigahara is a beautiful, albeit strange place. The forest grows from an ancient lava bed, causing trees to grow at offputting angles, and tree roots to snake dangerously across the forest floor. The ground is littered with holes and caves, and sunlight struggles to penetrate the forest's lush, green canopy. Unfortunately, today, Aokigahara is known for something other than its otherwordly beauty. Today, Aokigahara is known as the "suicide forest", as more people commit suicide in Aokigahara than anywhere else in Japan, and some claim more than anywhere else in the world.
