In our fifth episode on Revelation and the Politics of Jesus, we're going to look at what Charles Taylor calls the "age of anxiety." Have you ever noticed how much pressure there is on each of us to come up with our own identity, our own purpose, our own meaning?

It is precisely this pressure that stirs in us anxiety, and it is each of our anxieties that are then manipulated by politicians with the politics of fear.

How are Christians call to respond to such politics? What does it look like to both trust God and protest the injustices around us?

Revelation 8-11 contains some fascinating and bewildering visions, of seven trumpets, more intimate gatherings of the saints surrounding the heavenly throne, and even a vision of John eating a “little scroll” and then observing the work of two strange “witnesses” who offer up miraculous deeds, before dying, rising and ascending to God.

What if we are called to take seriously the power of prayer that Revelation describes as “rising to God like incense before the altar”? What if we are called to take seriously our role as witnesses to protest injustice but to witness to far greater power of God?

What if following the politics of Jesus could look like praying as we protest, and what if our prayer protests are part of the way we seek the good of our neighborhoods and cities?
