DHEA levels decline in men and women after age 25. So by age 50 we are producing just 50% of the DHEA we made when we were in our physical and hormonal prime of life. As DHEA levels gradually decrease past age 25, cortisol, the inflammatory response hormone gradually increases. DHEA is a precursor to 50 smaller more specific hormones like estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
