Episode 26: The Tricksters - Willie Lynch, Lee Atwater, and ...
Update: 2020-08-08
Description
In this episode we learn about the slave owner Willie Lynch and his infamous 1712 speech on how to control slaves. Some say it is fictitious and others believe it to be fact. Whether it actually occurred is actually not even an issue as all that is documented within the speech rings true and still has implications today. Lynch’s speech teaches that the best way to control slaves is by exploiting differences and pitting them against each other, such as young versus old, dark versus light, male versus female and likens it to breaking a horse. He taught to keep the body strong but make the mind weak and dependent on the slave master. The word lynching came from his last name as it was one of his most famous methods.
Juxtapose this with Lee Atwater's infamous 1981 interview that explains how Republicans can win the vote of racists without sounding racist themselves. Atwater worked as a campaign consultant with the Ronald Regan administration and touted that by changing your language you wouldn't get called racist when pushing for changes that would ultimately hurt Blacks worse than Whites.
Current conditions in America are directly related to systems of institutionalized racism, from slavery and still today.
Questions to Consider:
What other “tricksters” can you identify?
In what ways are the mental traumas of slavery still plaguing the decendants of those enslaved?
What current systems are set up to divide and perpetuate the same results?
What resonates most with you?
Who else will you share this with?`
