Co-regulation refers to when our nervous systems are brought into a state of connection with another person, while co-activation occurs when our nervous system is triggered into a protective state. 

The exchange of energy between two people can happen in any situation, whether it's a casual interaction with a cashier or a deeper relationship with a spouse. Our nervous systems are always scanning for safety and belonging, and this affects how we interact with others.  

Learning to understand and respond to these nervous system states can be a big part of finding lasting calm and enduring emotional health.
