“Men have to have a reason for getting up in the morning. Men have to have a reason for taking care of this stuff. And purpose is really important to men.” – Ron Lee

It's Ok to be a Man

Society has been sending a message about masculine toxicity and men are suffering. In this episode, Ron and Lexie discuss the increase in suicide for men and some of the causes. Listen to hear statistics about what is happening and some ideas about how to turn the tide.

In today’s episode, Ron and Lexie discuss the challenges faced by men in today's society and the impact of societal messaging and education on boys and men.

In this Podcast:

  1. How does society's denial of the importance of purpose and action impact men's development from a young age?

  2. What are the challenges and issues faced by men in today's society?

  3. What is the role of fathers and what is the importance of fathers in today's society?

  4. What is the "redshirting boys" movement and how does it aim to address the developmental differences between boys and girls in education?

  5. What are the impacts of societal messaging and boys’ education?

How does society's denial of the importance of purpose and action impact men's development from a young age?

Society is denying the importance of purpose and action for men, and that this messaging starts at a young age. They note that only 24% of teachers from kindergarten to 12th grade are male, and that boys are often labeled as having disabilities for exhibiting natural masculine traits.

What are the challenges and issues faced by men in today's society?

Men face unique challenges in today's society, and it's important that we recognize and address them. Suicide rates are rising, and many men feel lost and undervalued. The messaging that boys receive in their elementary years can have a negative impact on their self-esteem and sense of purpose.

What is the role of fathers and what is the importance of fathers in today's society?

Approximately one in three children lose contact with their fathers if their parents separate. Even if fathers are fulfilling their financial responsibilities through child support, they may still be unable to maintain a relationship with their children due to various reasons.

What is the "redshirting boys" movement and how does it aim to address the developmental differences between boys and girls in education?

Boys tend to develop at a slower pace compared to girls. This has led to a movement called "redshirting boys," which suggests not holding them back a year in school so that they can catch up developmentally with girls. The delay in development may contribute to lower grades for boys, and it is suggested that the educational focus on girls has resulted in a significant gap where more females become valedictorians.

What are the impacts of societal messaging and boys’ education?

There is a lack of psychologists and counselors specifically catering to men, especially those under the age of 30. It suggests that a message is being conveyed that conditions like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are more prevalent among men. The hosts argue that there is a difference in how boys and girls exhibit behaviors, and boys are often diagnosed with autism or put on medication to control their behaviors. They attribute this to a societal expectation for boys to conform to the behavior of girls in educational settings, such as sitting still, being quiet, and raising their hand.

About the Married Entrepreneurs Podcast

We have such a passion for meeting new people and helping those peeps who are crazy like us and have decided that two entrepreneurs who don’t follow the traditional path should be in business together while married to each other.

We met each other over 25 years ago and although it was not love at first sight, it is a love story for the history books.  We have navigated how to be married, which can be a feat in itself, and survived the early years of keeping the children alive; also not easy.  And we did all this while being in multiple businesses together.  When we say we have been there, we mean it. We have made poor choices in the past, struggled to make a profit, and had to learn not to listen to all those who say you can’t mix business with pleasure. Sound familiar? Want to join us on this journey?  We are unpacking what we have learned in this process and as marriage counselors by trade while also bringing on other experts who can help us all on this path to avoid failing businesses and divorce court.  Join us on the path to happily ever after and listen today.
