Description

When we hear the words, “free agent,” our minds often think about sports drafts. Athletes often consider themselves “free agents,” always up for a change of teams depending on the highest bidder.

In professional careers, we often don’t consider ourselves “free agents.” We’re employees or unemployed or entrepreneurs or self-employed. But why don’t we consider ourselves to be like athletes? Why don’t we encourage a bidding war? What stops us?

The irony is that we are now in a “gig economy.” More and more, people are working for different companies, almost self-employed. One could argue that companies like Uber and Lyft support this. Sure, it speaks to temporary jobs and a spark of entrepreneurship, but is this becoming the new norm? Are we now all free agents?
