Episode 55: Sailing Without Navigation
Description
On this episode, I am joined by ICU nurse, colleague and friend Deb Hume. She recounts her formative years as a flight nurse, and sailor and how responding to emergencies in the outback of Australia and open ocean sailing races taught her self reliance as a young woman. Deb was speaking recently with colleagues in the ICU about COVID and discovered to her surprise, raw emotion just under the surface. We discuss how our experiences treating COVID patients amidst the environment of fear, limited resources and understanding of the disease often felt like sailing without navigation. Without a strong hospital culture, self care rituals, and checking in with each other, the challenges would have overwhelmed us. The impact of that experience still lingers, and is a psychological toll felt by all of us on the front lines.
