Trauma is most often the gateway drug and rarely is addiction a character issue. Substance abuse is a means to medicate enough in order not to feel. Chad asks Addie, “After all your negative experiences being in relationships with alcoholics who were also abusive, how did we end up together? What made you feel/think that it would be different with me?”
