Do you know how much your work matters to God?
A Walmart greeter, a nurse, and an astronaut walk into a church....
They each bring with them their own exhaustion and exasperation, their own uncertainty about how their work matters to God. Good news: All work matters to God, because all work reflects some aspect of his character. He created the world so that it runs best when it mirrors him, and you will find the most fulfillment when you recognize God behind your labor.
John Van Sloten leads an innovative investigation of vocation. It's a fascinating journey that illuminates how your work is a parable of God - as you work, you are an icon of grace.

Every Job A Parable
"Every Job A Parable" by John Van Sloten is a good read on integrating work with the Christian faith. Indeed, many people seem to subscribe to the "sacred/secular" separation of our week. Indeed, for the believer, everything Sunday-Saturday is sacred and the author shows how we can represent and reflect God through various occupations. A few examples of how God fits into our jobs follow:
1. Delivering flyers
2. Walmart greeter
3. Electrician (as an electrician brings power to a home or building, God brings power into our lives through Jesus Christ).
4. Auto mechanic
5. Scientist
6. Sanitation worker (as they clean the city and town, God cleans up our lives)
7. Judge (as a good judge brings justice, God brings justice and fairness to the world and will perfect everything once the believers are in heaven).
8. Emergency room physician (as they deal with emergencies, we can depend on God to help us in our emergencies).
Many other occupations are included, so these are just a few examples. The book is just over 200 pages, flows smoothly from chapter to chapter, and contains many good insights on not only how to integrate faith into our work, but to challenge to see God in our work. Good read. I was given a review copy by Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for a fair review.

EVERY JOB A PARABLE
What Walmart Greeters, Nurses & Astronauts Tell Us About God
By John Van Sloten
Do you think your job is important to God? Does God think your job is important to Him? The answers can be found in this book about jobs and how they serve God. The author has compiled many stories from across the USA about the different occupations and vocations from the people that work every day for a living. Many of these people do not realize how important their job is and how much God is using that job and them for His glory. Stories from the high paying to the job that own pays minimum wages, every job is important to God. The book is written in four parts; What does it mean to image God?, What is a parable, and how is work a parable?, What does God reveal to us about Himself through our work?, and How can we more effectively and consistently image God through our work?.
A very easy reading and a lot of information in this book. The book can be used in discussion groups and other studies. There are sections at the end of each chapter called Lectio Vocatio, that has some discussion questions.
A quote from the back of the book; âJohn Van Sloten leads an innovative investigation of vocation.
