Excavations at Rathgurreen Ringfort

Dig into the Story in Amplify Archaeology Podcast Episode 48 with Dr Michelle Comber

In this episode of Amplify Archaeology Podcast, Neil chats with Dr Michelle Comber about her exciting recent excavations at Rathgurreen Ringfort in the Maree Peninsula of County Galway

The Maree Peninsula extends into Galway Bay south of the city, and north of the Burren. It is a place full of history, with monuments spanning millennia. The peninsula is the focus of an exciting new research project by the University of Galway with the Discovery Programme, the local community, and other partners. The study began with excavations at Rathgurreen Ringfort, led by Dr Michelle Comber.

The dig discovered a complex story of continuity and change over centuries, along with evidence of contacts with the Roman world, along with Scotland, France, and Scandinavia. In this episode of Amplify Archaeology Podcast, Michelle joined Neil for a chat about the exciting results of the dig, and what it might tell us about life in the past in this beautiful part of Ireland’s western coast.
