Matthew Szydagis’s interest in extraterrestrial life grew following the AATIP revelations, the Nimitz incident, and discoveries of numerous Earth-like exoplanets, challenging the idea of Earth’s uniqueness. Recent discoveries by colleagues in the exoplanets field, especially numerous Earth-like planets, caused him to question the assumption of Earth’s uniqueness for life.
