People of all ages repost memes mocking depression or create TikToks showing what they ate while suffering from an eating disorder. These accounts of suffering, whether earnest or ironic, are highly aestheticized. Some make us laugh, while others inspire a longing for these conditions. Why does this happen? No one looks at physical illness and thinks, “I want that.” So why is it different with mental illness? The truth is that the way you perceive mental health affects how you see your own.
