Have you ever started crying for apparently "no reason"? Have you ever had a reaction that afterwards seemed "disproportionate"? Do you ever feel incredibly fearful, even when you rationally know it doesn't really make sense?
If so, you were probably feeling triggered.
The term “trigger” is a little bit overused these days, but they are real, and they can have a huge impact on our mental health. Stemming from the memory of traumatic or difficult past experiences, triggers are subconscious and irrational fears our emotional memory imposes on us. Today I am going to talk about how they affect us, and more importantly, how to effectively DEAL with triggers and let them go on our own, with no external reassurance (because girl, your trigger, your responsibility). For that purpose, I tell you a little bit about my own journey with triggers, particularly in romantic relationships, and how I've worked on them, both with my therapist and on my own.
