In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, attended one of the first Mothers Day services and had an epiphany-fathers also deserved a special day honoring them. The first Father's Day was celebrated in 1920, but it did not become a national holiday until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a Congressional resolution declaring the third Sunday in June to be Father's Day.
