The U.S. Department of Energy has issued an emergency order, defying Washington states Clean Energy Transformation Act, to keep TransAltas coal plant in Centralia, Washington, running until March 2026. This order, similar to others in Michigan and Pennsylvania, cites an increasing risk of rolling blackouts due to extreme weather, insufficient power generation, and a surge in demand from electrification and large industrial users. However, Washington state agencies and the Utilities and Transportation Commission have concluded that this risk is not immediate. The order is expected to raise electricity rates and has prompted a potential legal challenge from the NW Energy Coalition.
