When Stephen King writing under his pseudonym Richard Bachmann published The Running Man in 1982, he imagined a dystopian future set in the year 2025. Back then, that year felt like a distant, even unthinkable horizon. For Glen Powell, fast forward to the real 2025, and the world has finally caught up with King’s vision just as a new film version of The Running Man prepares to hit theaters.

A new adaptation from Edgar Wright and Glen Powell

The latest Running Man movie comes from acclaimed filmmaker Edgar Wright, who serves as producer, director, and co-writer. Known for his distinctive storytelling style in films like Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho, Wright has promised a version that’s more faithful to King’s original novel than the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film.

Wright’s adaptation is expected to balance the high-octane action of the original with deeper social and political commentary themes that, according to the cast, feel more relevant than ever.

Glen Powell on the film’s timely message

Starring Glen Powell, fresh off hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Hit Man, the new Running Man explores issues of surveillance, media exploitation, and the commodification of violence all elements that King’s story foresaw decades ago. Powell says the story feels uncannily relevant in today’s media-driven world.

The Running Man opens exclusively in theaters on Friday, bringing King’s dark vision of a televised death game into a new era one that may look uncomfortably familiar to modern audiences.
