Publisher's Summary:
"There are few sensations I prefer to that of galloping over these rolling limitless prairies, with rifle in hand, or winding my way among the barren, fantastic and grimly picturesque deserts of the so-called Bad Lands." (Theodore Roosevelt)
He was born a city boy in Manhattan; but it wasn't until he lived as a cattle rancher and deputy sheriff in the wild country of the Dakota Territory that Theodore Roosevelt became the man who would be president. "I have always said I would not have been president had it not been for my experience in North Dakota," Roosevelt later wrote. It was in the "grim fairyland" of the Bad Lands that Roosevelt became acquainted with the ways of cowboys, Native Americans, trappers, thieves, and wild creatures - and it was there that his spirit was forged and tested.
In Forging a President, author William Hazelgrove uses Roosevelt's own reflections to immerse listeners in the formative seasons that America's 26th president spent in "the broken country" of the Wild West.

Members Reviews:
Amazing historical book about Teddy Roosevelt. Beautifully done.
I greatly enjoyed reading this book. I live in North Dakota and the people here have a deep fondness for Teddy Roosevelt. I actually had tears well up in my eyes when he described his surprise at the fervent admiration, appreciation, and love he came to have for this state, even with its harsh weather and stark Badlands!

âThe âromance of his life,â as Theodore Roosevelt described his relationship with the American West, lasted from 1883 to 1887.â
Chicago author William Hazelgrove has developed a significant following as the author of thirteen novels - Ripples, Tobacco Sticks, Mica Highways, Rocket Man, The Pitcher, Real Santa, Jack Pine, Hemingwayâs Attic, My Best Year, The Bad Author, Madam President, and now Forging a President. While his books have received starred reviews in Publisher Weekly and Booklist, Book of the Month Selections, ALA Editors Choice Awards Junior Library Guild Selections and optioned for the movie, his major appeal is in his humanitarian approach to stories. William stays close too the heart in each of his stories, making each tale he spins one with which everyone can relate on an immediate or a remembered level.
His latest novel FORGING A PRESIDENT he enters historical biography and proves that this also is a realm in which he understands both the characters â the influence of time and place and events that mold our presidents - and in doing so he brings about an appreciation for just little we appreciate about some of our past leaders.
William states in his authorâs note, âThe West created Teddy Roosevelt. His mother and wife died on the same day and this sent the young sickly man to the Dakota Territory for three years. He snuck in just before the West was declared closed forever in 1890 and returned barrel chested with the energy of the man who would build the Panama Canal and lead the country as our most vigorous President. What happened out West was a transmutation of a young broken hearted man into the hard charging persona who grips us to this day. It is an amazing adventure of a man in search of himself.â
Enough said. William Hazelgrove continues to grow as a writer of importance whose breadth of interest in topics for novels is truly astonishing.
