Part 1 -Never enough time
I want to learn English, but I just do not have the time. This is the number one excuse that I hear for not making a solid commitment to learn English or any new language, and for good reason. Most of us are busy. We all have responsibilities that are important and sometimes they must take priority. If you are a student, you need to attend class and study. If you have a job, you need to do your job and do it well. If you are a parent, you must take care of your children’s needs. The list goes on and on. Many people sincerely are very busy all day, every day. However, there may be a better way to use your time during the day, especially when it comes to learning to speak a new language.
Let’s take a look at a day in the life of my friend, Jim. Jim is a very busy guy. He has his own business and wakes up early to get to work on time every day. After Jim wakes up, he gets ready and makes breakfast. Then, Jim drives a half hour to work. Jim works hard all day and only takes a short break for lunch. When Jim gets home, he first has dinner with his wife and two children. Then, Jim helps his wife clean up by washing and drying the dishes. After the dishes are clean and dry, Jim helps his son and daughter with their homework. At the end of the day, Jim takes care of some responsibilities around the house and spends some time with his wife. Jim also attends church every weekend and he frequently helps with the service.
Jim sincerely wants to learn to speak English, but where can he find the time in his busy schedule? Using traditional methods, this would be very close to mission impossible, because Jim would have to study grammar and new vocabulary by sitting down with a textbook or computer program most days. However, Jim is determined to learn to speak the English language, so he looks for a better way. One day, Jim is searching online and discovers another method. Jim learns about another method that allows him to learn naturally, a method that does not involve studying grammar. Jim liked the fact that he would be able to learn in time that is usually wasted, so he decides to give it a try.
Part 2 – A better way
Each weekend, Jim plans to read a new lesson and look up any words that he does not know. Reading a new lesson and looking up unknown words on google translate takes Jim about 15 to 20 minutes. During the week, Jim plans to listen to his lesson over and over while he is making breakfast, and again while he drives to and from work. This will allow Jim to listen to his lesson for an hour and a half every day without wasting any of his valuable time. Jim’s plan allows him to listen to each lesson about 30 times in one week. This is enough repetition for Jim to understand most of his lesson by the end of the week, this means that he is ready to move on to the next lesson. If Jim does not understand most of his lesson, he just listens to it again the following week until he does understand most of it. Jim’s ability to understand and use English in daily conversations is increasing faster than he ever imagined possible.
Part 3 – Questions and Answers: Now I will tell a small part of Jim’s plan followed by a pause, this pause is time for you to answer out loud. Short and quick answers are best. My answers may by slightly longer to provide context. This technique simulates a conversation and helps you to start thinking in English. Answer the questions as if you were Jim.
Each weekend, Jim plans to read a new lesson and look up any words that he does not know.
-Is Jim planning on studying grammar and memorizing lists of vocabulary every weekend?
No, Jim only plans on reading one lesson each weekend, and he only plans on looking up the words that he does not already know. Jim does not plan to waste any time studying grammar or memorizing lists.
Reading a new lesson and looking up unknown words on google translate takes Jim about 15 to 20 minutes.
-Does it take Jim all weekend to read one of his lessons and look up unknown words?
No, it only takes Jim about 15 to 20 minutes to read a lesson and look up any unknown words.
During the week, Jim plans to listen to his lesson over and over while he is making breakfast, and again while he drives to and from work.
-Is Jim going to listen to his English lessons while he sleeps?
No, Jim is not going to waste his time listening to his lessons while he sleeps. He plans to listen to his lessons while he is making breakfast and driving to and from work.
This will allow Jim to listen to his lesson for an hour and a half every day without wasting any of his valuable time.
-Is Jim able to listen to his lesson for an hour and a half every day without wasting any of his valuable time?
Yes, since Jim can listen to his lessons while he does things he needs to do anyway, he does not have to waste any of his valuable time.
Jim’s plan allows him to listen to each lesson about 30 times in one week.
-Does Jim plan on listening to his English lesson 30 times in one week?
Yes, Jim understands that his brain needs repetition to acquire common verbal phrases and patterns. This is why Jim’s plan allows him to listen to a 15-minute lesson about 30 times in one week.
This is enough repetition for Jim to understand most of his lesson by the end of the week, this means that he is ready to move on to the next lesson.
-How does Jim know when he is ready to move on to his next lesson?
Jim knows that he is ready to move on to the next lesson when he can understand most of his current lesson. When I say most, I mean about 90 to 95% of it.
If Jim does not understand most of his lesson, he just listens to it again the following week until he does understand most of it.
-If Jim does not understand most of his lesson by the end of the week, what does he do?
If Jim does not understand at least 90 to 95% of his lesson, he just listens to it again the following week.
Jim’s ability to understand and use English in daily conversations is increasing faster than he ever imagined possible.
-Is Jim getting results?
Yes, Jim’s ability to understand and use English in conversations is increasing faster than he ever thought possible.
Conclusion
This method allows you to learn faster because it gives your brain the context that it needs to learn naturally, and when you learn naturally, you learn faster. As you repeat each lesson, your mind will naturally acquire common verbal phrases and patterns, the same way that children learn language.
