Freeze Frame: “Jurassic World: Rebirth” (PG-13), “The Old Guard 2” (R), “Heads of State” (R)
Update: 2025-07-04
Description
"Jurassic World Rebirth" is the seventh installment in the wildly popular sci-fi franchise. Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali lead a covert expedition to recover dinosaur blood samples from living specimens at an abandoned island research facility in the tropics. They hope to make a fortune by using the dino blood as a cure for heart disease. Naturally, things go awry. Fans of the series will get exactly what they want, great special effects and scary situations...even if it’s reminiscent of what has come before. “Jurassic World Rebirth” arrives 32 years after the original “Jurassic Park” came out…and this franchise ain't extinct, yet.
As the title suggests, the Netflix thriller "The Old Guard 2" is a sequel to Charlize Theron’s 2020 action fantasy “The Old Guard.” It’s based on the comic book series about a small band of soldiers for hire who are immortal and have regenerative healing abilities. That makes them pretty good mercenaries. Unlike the original, “The Old Guard 2” is burdened with stilted dialogue, poor plotting, phony fight choreography, bad lighting and a frustrating cliffhanger ending. The characters in “The Old Guard 2” may be immortal, but this franchise should die.
If it weren't for the likable cast, the absurd Amazon Prime action comedy "Heads of State" might be hard to sit through. Idris Elba and John Cena play the Prime Minister of the UK and the President of the US, respectively. When Air Force One is shot down by terrorists, the duo parachutes into the wilderness of Belarus and goes on the run to find safe haven, bickering all the way. The writing is dumb, but the over-the-top action in “Heads of State” provides a bit of mindless fun.
