Friday Family Film Night: SPIDER BABY review
Description
On night 5 of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing SPIDER BABY (1967), from writer/director Jack Hill. Loyal chauffeur Bruno (Lon Chaney Jr.) serves as the caretaker for the three orphaned Merrye siblings, who suffer from a rare genetic disorder that causes them to mentally and physically regress into homicidal, savage children. He attempts to conceal their murderous, childlike antics, which include "playing spider" with knives, to protect them from the outside world and uphold a promise to their late father. When greedy distant relatives arrive at the decaying estate to claim the family fortune, Bruno's desperate efforts to maintain the secret and shield the last of the Merrye line lead to a night of macabre chaos and a tragic, fiery conclusion. The film, also known as SPIDER BABY OR, THE MADDEST STORY EVER TOLD clocks in at 1 h and 21 m, is not rated. We caught the film on TCM but it is streaming on Fawesome, Plex, Prime Video, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
