In this sermon on Genesis 42–44, we see Joseph testing his brothers through a series of “final exams” that ultimately reveal their repentance and transformation. The sermon highlights four specific tests: imprisonment, silver returned in their sacks, Benjamin’s favored treatment, and Benjamin being framed. The climax comes when Judah offers himself as a substitute for Benjamin, pointing us directly to Jesus Christ, the ultimate substitute who gave His life for guilty sinners. This is the first substitution in the Bible and a clear foreshadowing of the gospel.

This is the first time in the Bible that someone offers themselves as a substitute. This sets the stage for the ultimate substitute, Jesus Christ.
