Aimed at tourists, but still a good start
Overall, I liked this enough to purchase the next book, Keep Talking Portuguese, and my Portuguese friends have said my vocabulary and pronunciation are improving. It was very difficult to find any European Portuguese learning materials, but I've been pretty happy with this one. It caters to tourists rather than those who want to converse with friends, so it uses the formal verb forms (something I would not have thought to check if I didn't also speak Spanish). If your goal is to be conversational, you will want a grammar guide or friend (or both) to help you. They spent an unnecessary amount of time teaching how to complain in a restaurant, and could have used that to focus on more common phrases or even emergency situations (where is the bathroom, I need a doctor/hospital/police, etc). The Portuguese voice actors were very good and spoke very clearly, especially the ones running scenarios. I noticed after I finished that this comes with a PDF, which is great because I like to use both whenever possible. I feel like this gave me a pretty strong base.
