Description

Federal departments spent over $775 million on travel last year, a significant increase from the previous year. Only four departments reduced their spending. Operation Leedstrum and Operation Lunar, whole-of-government campaigns against illegal foreign fishing, contributed to the increase. Services Australias larger travel bill was due to increased costs, more trips to remote areas, and election-related travel. The Department of Defence had the highest travel bill, spending over $448 million, an 18% increase from the year before. Despite pledges to reduce non-wage expenses, the government did not fully agree to measures to crack down on airline perks and set economy class as the standard for public servants.
