Joel is one of the minor prophets. In it we find warnings for priests to put on sackcloth and lament. Typical of prophetic writings, there is a lot of future tense language. The text goes on from a reporter’s urging to a series of warnings to a vision of what the world will look like. Joel’s God is the one capable of destruction, judgement, and also this God is willing to be gracious and compassionate to those who return with their whole hearts.
