Great Whites in Mediterranean Face Extinction
Update: 2025-12-30
Description
Great white sharks in the Mediterranean Sea are facing extinction due to illegal fishing in North African waters. US scientists and UK charity Blue Marine Foundation discovered that at least forty great whites have been killed in twenty twenty-five alone. Despite international protection, these sharks are openly sold in markets. A research team attempted to tag a great white with a satellite tracker but only glimpsed a blue shark. A juvenile great white was caught and killed nearby. Conservationists see a sliver of hope as some sharks still exist, but quick action and better regional cooperation are needed to save these critically endangered predators from extinction.
