Shu Fen comes to Karen to speak to her deceased grandmother, Mei Ling, who admits to treating Mei Ling poorly due to being a “non-real” grandchild from a second marriage. Together, they learn Mei Ling’s actions were driven by the anger toward her husband and disapproval of her daughter’s independence.
