Homeownership Delayed: The New Norm
Update: 2025-12-26
Description
Homeownership Delayed: The Shift in Age and Prices - The average first-time homebuyer in the U.S. is now forty, up from thirty-eight in 2024 and thirty-five in 2023. Home prices have surged, with the median sales price reaching $440,387 in October 2025, compared to $86,800 in the 1980s. Only 21% of buyers in 2025 were first-time homebuyers, an all-time low. Repeat buyers are also getting older, averaging 62 years old. Despite the challenges, its not too late to achieve homeownership, as higher costs and older buyers indicate a tougher market ahead.
