Update: 2025-10-10
Description
Today on The Modern Homeschool Podcast, we're discussing different homeschooling styles. I don't fit the mold for any one homeschooling style and I don't think you should either; however, it' s great to understand different homeschooling philosophies out there. Here are a few topics covered in this episode:
Charlotte Mason Homeschooling- Structured lessons in nature, art, reading, oral narration, writing, scripture, and Latin coupled with traditional subjects. A whole child education with a large variety of learning opportunities.
Montessori Homeschooling- Child led, Adult guided, learning that fosters independence, self-direction and hands-on learning.
Classical Homeschooling- This style builds yearly on different periods of history, incorporates a heavy literature and biblical basis and is divided into three sections of learning by age group. Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric.
Hygge Homeschooling-The Danish tradition of incorporating comfort, beauty, contentment and warmth into all aspects of your home in order to promote a cozy environment in which to learn and live in.
Budget Homeschooling- Using what we have and being creative with free resources at the library and online.
By Grade/Traditional Homeschooling- Homeschooling to grade requirements; prescriptive home- schooling as defined by state and federal requirements. Reminiscent of school at home. Eclectic Homeschooling- A mixture of lots of different curricula and books to encourage a wide range of resources and learning experiences.
Literature Based/Unit Study Homeschooling- Reading and studying books together and informing each subject of learning through the current literature/genre of study.
Art/Nature Based Homeschooling- Incorporating art into all aspects of learning with a strong focus on nature and the outdoors. Spending lots of time outdoors unstructured.
Unschooling- Rejection of traditional schooling methodologies in favor of unstructured, child led learning.
