House Hunters: Week Two – “A Church On Mission” | Pastor Danny Wolford

In this powerful continuation of the “House Hunters” series, Pastor Danny Wolford takes us deep into the heart of what it means to be a church on mission. Drawing from both the Gospel of John and the Great Commission in Matthew, Danny paints a compelling picture of the church’s ultimate purpose—to go out into the world, proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ.

Danny opens by examining Jesus’ prayer in John 17, where Jesus prays not only for His disciples but for all believers. He emphasizes the call for unity and mission, urging us to remember that the church is not a place we go to, but rather a community on a mission to share the gospel. Danny brings the church back to its foundational mission: to reach those far from God, to care for the broken, and to walk alongside the lost.

John 17:13-19 provides the backdrop for the sermon, where Jesus prays for His disciples to be in the world but not of it. Danny reflects on this as a crucial part of the Christian life, explaining that we are called to engage with the world but not be consumed by it. He goes on to explain how the church, like Isaiah in Isaiah 6, must have a posture of saying, “Here am I, send me,” ready to be used by God wherever we are called.

Next, Danny turns to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, highlighting how the mission of the church is clearly laid out: to make disciples of all nations. He underscores the necessity of the church being proactive, not just waiting for people to come in, but stepping outside the four walls of the building to bring Christ to others. The heart of the mission, according to Danny, is to be brokenhearted for the lost, understanding that the mission field begins the moment we walk out the doors of the church.

Danny challenges the congregation with the concept that the gospel is confrontational. While the world might offer comfort, the true gospel compels us to face our own sin, repent, and live in the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. Using 1 John 2:15 , Danny warns against the dangers of loving the world and its pleasures more than God, calling the church to refocus on its true purpose.

The sermon also touches on the story of Abraham in Genesis 12, reminding us of the promise God made to bless the nations through him. Danny weaves this into the broader theme of being a blessing to others and how, as a church on mission, we are all part of God’s plan to bring redemption to the world.

Finally, Danny closes the sermon with a personal challenge: Are you living on mission? Are you actively sharing the love of Christ with others? He calls the congregation to examine their hearts, to recommit to living out the Great Commission, and to embrace the discomfort of the gospel because it leads to true transformation.

Closing Prayer: As Danny prays, he asks God to ignite a fire within the hearts of the congregation, to break their hearts for the lost, and to strengthen them to be bold witnesses of Jesus in their everyday lives.
